Guide to Electrical Insulation Flooring Products

Why Use Electrical Insulation Flooring?

Working with high voltage electrical equipment is extremely risky, especially when safety precautions are not taken. Considering this fact, it is no surprise that electrocution is considered as one of the leading causes of death in work environments. Using high quality electrical insulation flooring products or switchboard matting will not only mitigate this risk but will also reduce interruptions to workflow and exposure to lawsuits. Furthermore, the use of electrical insulating material is being made mandatory by an increasing number of governing bodies to comply with occupational health and safety.

How Insulating Flooring Offer Protection against Electrocution?

The specially formulated rubber compound in these flooring products produce a dielectric effect, which is the prevention of free flow of electricity caused by the molecular structure. Basically, these insulating materials prevent workers from being earthed when exposed to an electrical current, thus protecting against electrocution.

How do I Chose the Ideal Electrical Insulation Flooring solution?

When looking to purchase this protective flooring, there are few key factors that need to be examined. Evaluating the following parameters will ensure that you buy the right insulation mat for your exact requirement.

1. Working Voltage

Electrical Insulation Flooring products are divided into 5 classes based on their dielectric strength, or in other words, the protection these products offer in terms of voltage limit. The class along with the working voltage are denoted on the bottom-side of the product with a color-coded marking. You may refer the following table to get an idea of the class (and color code) that would suit your requirements:

All the above-mentioned classes are available in our range of switchboard matting.

Microcells has also successfully formulated a new compound enabling us to deliver thinner and lighter insulation flooring products which provide the same level of protection, when compared to other competing products in the market. For more details on the newly developed electrical insulation range, please feel free to get in touch with us.

2. Certification Standards

Certification standards for electrical insulation products may differ from country to country depending on the occupational health and safety frameworks set by their respective governing bodies. However, IEC 61111 (Global/UK/Europe) & ASTM D178 (North America/Global) can be considered two of the most comprehensive and well recognized accreditations in the market. Based on the testing criteria defined by these standards, electrical insulation products are put through stringent tests to determine the dielectric strength. Our range of electrical insulating flooring products are both IEC 61111 and ASTM D178 certified!

3. Special Requirements & Customizations

Depending on the environment the product will be installed in and the resulting exposure to chemicals or elements (heat, ozone etc.), electrical insulation flooring requirements may need special properties to function effectively. Using the right product for the right environment is critical and would determine the longevity and the performance of the product.

The option of customizing insulation flooring in terms of dimensions and color is also another factor that needs to be considered. Microcells is fully equipped to customize our electrical insulation matting in terms of length, thickness color, labelling and any special requirements that you may have.
